Connection Issues

If for some reason you lose your connection to WaupacaOnline.Net, please try the following troubleshooting techniques.

  • Reboot your computer.  We always recommend that you do this as carefully as possible.  Windows users should do a Start-Shutdown-Restart.  Shutting power off or pushing the reset button while Windows is still up is not a recommended or safe procedure.

  • If rebooting your computer does not work then try to power cycle your antenna.  This can be done by disconnecting the power cord from the DC Injector.  The DC injector is located either about 1 foot from the end of the cable that is connected to the WAN porter of your router or the Ethernet port  on your computer.  The power cord is a black cord that is plugged into the top of the injector, it is not the cord that has a phone-like jack.  Wait 5 seconds and plug it back in.  Wait another 10 seconds and try the internet again.

Note: USB customers do not have this setup. The USB antenna will power cycle if you power cycle your computer.

  • If this does not correct your problem, please call us at 715-942-0703.

ICQ and AIM

  1. Exercise caution when using Internet Relay Chat (IRC) or Personal Messengers (i.e. ICQ or AIM)
IRC and personal messengers have become a popular means of sharing information and files via the Internet. As such, your personal contact information can be compromised in such environments. Files received via these methods have a greater likelihood of being infected by viruses, as often these files are not scanned prior to transmission.)

Most IRC clients and personal messengers allow users to select 'auto-accept file transfer requests' and 'launch on retrieval' options. Enabling these options can pose a risk to the security of a computer system.

It is advised that users only accept file transfer requests from individuals they know and trust. If this is not a viable solution, all files should be scanned for viruses prior to attempting to launch any executables or documents, which could contain viruses.

Netiquette

  1. Follow General Netiquette Guidelines
Netiquette is simply network etiquette. Netiquette does not consist of hard and fast rules that everyone on the Internet must follow but a list of items that are used to assist all users to enjoy their Internet experience. Some Netiquette guidelines are listed below:
    1. Adhere to the same standards of behavior online that you follow in real life
    2. Know where you are in cyberspace
    3. Respect other people's time and bandwidth
    4. Respect other people's privacy
    5. Share expert knowledge
    6. Be forgiving of other people's mistakes

  1. Disable File & Print Sharing
File and Print Sharing in Windows 9x and Macintosh operating systems is a feature that allows one computer on a network to access another computer's files or printer. Subscribers should leave file and printer sharing off unless there is a specific reason to enable it. If you require file and printer sharing Rogers Hi-Speed Internet recommends that subscribers password protect their machine using a wide array of third-party security software.

Note: Disabling file and print sharing is equally as important for security reasons when using a phone modem as it is with a cable modem.

During the time of your install until now, several changes may have occurred on your computer that would have caused this default setup to change.

To check if your file and print sharing is currently disabled, follow these links.

A. To disable file sharing for Windows 95/98
B.
To disable file sharing for Mac OS

B.  Disable file sharing for Mac OS computers:

    1. Open the Sharing Setup control panel.
If file sharing is already disabled, the File Sharing area of the control panel contains a status message that reads "File Sharing is Off" and the button on the right side of the File Sharing section is labeled Start. Close the control panel. You do not need to make any changes.
If the button on the control panel reads Stop, instead of Start, File Sharing is on. You should disable it before using the Rogers Hi-Speed Internet Network.
    2. If the Stop button appears, click it.
A dialog box appears asking you how many minutes to wait before turning off file sharing.
    3. Enter 0 (zero).
    4. Click OK.
    5. Close the Sharing Setup control panel.

  1. Disable Windows Messenger on Windows NT, 2000 and XP
Windows NT, 2000 and XP have a feature called Windows Messenger (this is different from MSN Messenger) that allows a network administrator to send messages to others on a network. The messages pop up directly on a user's computer desktop. This works very well for an office network where an administrator can send messages telling people that Email will not be working for a certain amount of time or that maintenance is being done on a printer.

However, on a service like the Rogers Hi-Speed network, this feature can be downright annoying. Unscrupulous users can send these pop-up messages to other Rogers Hi-Speed Internet customers using Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows XP. While these messages are not dangerous, they are extremely bothersome. Fortunately, you can turn off this feature and put an end to these annoyances.
