Most music sharing software programs, by default, open up the outbound (upload) port.  If you want to slow this down, to save bandwidth for your own use and everyone else's, please follow the instructions below.

TO DISABLE FILE SHARING IN KaZaA or Morpheus 1:
  1. Open KaZaA Media Desktop
  2. Click “Tools” on the top menu bar, and then select “Options” from the menu "Tools" menu. (Figure 1)

  1. In the “Options” Window, select the tab for “Traffic.”
  2. In the “Traffic” window, place a check in the box that states, “Disable sharing of files with other KaZaA users.” (Figure 2)

5.       In the “Advanced” window, place a check in the box that states, “Do not function as a SuperNode.” (Figure 3)

6.       This will turn off the ability of other users to download from your computer. This will noticeably increase your internet speeds.


TO DISABLE FILE SHARING IN Morpheus 2.0:

  1. Open Morpheus.
  2. Click “Edit” on the top menu bar, and then select “Options” from the "Edit" menu. (Figure 4)

  1. In the “Options” window, select “Traffic”
  2. Change the Maximum Upload Bandwidth to “5”. (Figure 5)
  3. Change the Maximum simultaneous uploads to “0”. (Figure 5)

  1. Select “OK” to save your changes.
  2. Unlike KaZaA, Morpheus may still attempt to share files regardless of these changes. To ensure that the files you download from Morpheus are not shared, move the files from Morpheus’ “My Shared Files” as soon as they complete downloading. (Figure 6) If you leave the files in this location, other users may still be able to download from your machine.

Napster

During setup, scan for files to share. After scan is completed, remove any checks on the following screen to disable file sharing.

On the next screen, select the folder in which you want to store your downloaded files and then check the box that says, "Don't share files in download folder."

If you forget to do these steps during the setup process or already have the program set up to share, you can disable sharing by clicking the File>Preferences tab.

Once in the preferences menu, select the "Transfer" tab and click the "Share more folders" button:

In this screen, be sure all boxes are un-checked, as pictured above. Also, when not using Napster, merely clicking the 'X' in the upper-right corner is not enough! You need to right-click the Napster icon in the system tray & select "Exit" from the drop-down menu.

iMesh

When registering as a new user on iMesh, when you get to this screen:

Be sure to uncheck the "run iMesh on startup," "Share download folder and all of its sub-folders automatically," and "Allow other users to view all my shared files" boxes. If iMesh is already set up & running, go into the Preferences>options menu.

Select the "share" category and be sure the "allow other users to view all my shared files" box is un-checked.

Once again, merely clicking the 'X' in the upper-right corner will not close iMesh, so you need to right-click the icon in the system tray and select "exit" from the drop-down menu.
How to Exit iMesh

Audio Galaxy

When installing Audio Galaxy you will be asked if you would like to put Audio Galaxy in your Startup Folder for easier use. . .select "no."


The only way to keep files from being shared with Audio Galaxy is to exit the satellite when not in use. To do this, select the File>exit file agent option in the satellite menu and select "yes" when asked if you want to close it.

Aimster

When installing Aimster, you will be asked to install Aimster instant messaging Layer. Click "Do not install", then hit next and proceed with the installation.

Once installed, or if you have already installed aimster, you need to turn off uploading. Launch aimster and click on settings.

Under the Aimster tab, make sure "Start Aimster when windows starts" is unchecked.

Even after disabling this option, however, Aimster installs a shortcut in your start-up folder. To avoid Aimster starting up the next time you start your computer, open Windows Explorer by right-clicking the start button and selecting "Explore from here."

Navigate to the C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp folder and remove the shortcut to Aimster.


Under the Transfers tab, change the number of uploads to 0.

Closing Aimster by clicking the 'X' in the upper-right corner will not close the application. You need to right click on the Aimster symbols ( and ) by your clock. Then select exit.

Gnutella

When installing Gnutella this screen pops up. Select "Share Only Specified Types" and make sure to remove all file types. Select each one and click remove.

If you already have Gnutella installed, launch the application and click on setup.


The settings window will pop up. Select the "Shared files" tab. Once at the "Shared Files" tab, you need to remove all file types in the "Extensions" area. Click on one file type at a time and click remove. Then uncheck the "Share all types of files" box..

 

To close Gnutella, click the "X" in the top right corner.

Scour Exchange


Scour doesn't have any way to regulate files and uploading. You need to turn off Scour when you’re not using the service. To turn it off, closing the web browser won't work. You need to right-click on the symbol by your clock. Then click "Exit Scour Exchange".


To avoid Scour starting up the next time you start your computer, open Windows Explorer by right-clicking the start button and selecting "Explore from here."

Navigate to the C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp folder and remove the shortcut to Scour.
